Australia Tightens Immigration Rules Amid Population Growth Concerns
Australia's government has announced new measures to tighten its immigration system, affecting international students and working holiday visa holders. The changes aim to reduce annual net migration to around 225,000 by 2028, bringing it closer to pre-pandemic levels.
Under the new rules, most international students will no longer be able to bring partners or children with them while studying in Australia. Exceptions will be made for students from certain Pacific Island countries and Southeast Asian nations.
The government has also introduced a ballot system for backpackers seeking to extend their working holiday visas and stricter visitor visa conditions, including a 'no further stay' provision.
Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said the measures were not prompted by the growing support for One Nation's immigration policies. Instead, he emphasized that Australia needs to manage its population growth responsibly.
