Authenticator Annoyance: Students Frustrated by New MFA System
Villanova University has switched from Duo to Microsoft Authenticator for its multi-factor authentication (MFA) system, citing improved security. However, students are finding the new system cumbersome and frustrating.
Unlike Duo, which only required a simple button click, Microsoft Authenticator demands that users type a two-digit code every time they log in to any Villanova account. This can be particularly troublesome for students who need to access university resources during class hours, when phones are often not allowed.
The conflict between the MFA requirements and classroom rules is causing headaches for students. 'The issue is not just that Microsoft Authenticator requires an extra step,' a student noted. 'It's that the university's authentication system and classroom expectations are actively at odds with each other, and students are caught in between.'
A possible solution proposed by some students is to provide alternative verification methods, such as passkeys or physical security keys, which would allow users to authenticate without phones.
