Autonomous Excavators Roll Out Across US Construction Sites
San Francisco-based Bedrock Robotics has made significant strides in autonomous construction equipment with its system, called the Bedrock Operator. This technology allows excavators to work independently on job sites without human operators. The company has successfully deployed its machines in Texas and Nevada on several large-scale projects.
The Bedrock Operator is a retrofit system that can be installed on existing diggers from major manufacturers like Caterpillar Inc (NYSE: CAT) (FRA: CAT1), Deere & Co (NYSE: DE) (FRA: DCO), and Komatsu Ltd (OTCMKTS: KMTUY). Once installed, the system enables machines to navigate their surroundings, perform digging and loading tasks, and even stop if people or objects come too close.
Bedrock CTO Kevin Peterson explained that the training process for the Bedrock Operator is similar to how one would train a large language model. The company uses a vast repository of data and know-how about construction to train its system. This approach has been successful, with Bedrock having raised over $350 million in total funding, including a recent $270 million round that valued the company at $1.75 billion.
The deployment of autonomous excavators on commercial projects marks a significant milestone for the industry. While earlier efforts focused on controlled tests and demonstrations, this step represents a broader adoption of automation on live sites. The technology may lead to safer working conditions and faster completion times due to the shortage of skilled operators.
