Avios Can't Be Traded for Tier Points on British Airways

British Airways has clarified its loyalty program rules, stating that Avios cannot be exchanged for tier points. This means travelers must earn each separately through specific activities. Tier points expire annually and determine elite status, while Avios are redeemable rewards. To earn tier points, customers can accumulate them from eligible flights, Sustainable Aviation Fuel credits, or spending on the BA American Express card, with a cap of 2,000 per year.

Avios, on the other hand, can be earned from flights, credit cards, or partners like Nectar and never expire if activity occurs every 36 months. However, neither currency converts to the other within BA's system. This distinction is crucial for travelers seeking status, as missing the March 31 expiry date means losing hard-earned status progress unless requalified in the next membership year.

While Finnair Plus permits limited annual Avios-to-tier-point exchanges, British Airways currently offers no such option. Travelers should focus on qualifying spend or SAF purchases to achieve their desired status. It's essential to note that future adjustments remain possible as loyalty programs evolve.
