AWS Could Reach $1 Trillion in Annual Revenue, Says Amazon's Andy Jassy
Amazon's cloud computing arm, Amazon Web Services (AWS), has been driving growth for the company. According to Andy Jassy, AWS' annual revenue run rate is now over $25 billion, a significant increase from its initial launch three years ago. This surge in demand is not limited to AI products and services, but also includes non-AI offerings.
The strong growth has prompted Amazon to increase its capital spending to build out infrastructure. The company plans to spend $220 billion this year, up from an earlier forecast of $200 billion. Despite this increased investment, Amazon expects demand for AWS to continue growing, with Jassy predicting that the business could reach at least $1 trillion in annual revenue.
This prediction is based on the early stages of AI usage by individuals and companies across industries. As AI becomes more widespread, it will require ongoing revenue from cloud service providers like AWS. While reaching $1 trillion represents a significant jump from the current $169 billion annual revenue run rate, Jassy believes it's possible if momentum continues.
AWS' growth is not solely dependent on AI, as its non-AI businesses are also seeing strong growth. Amazon's e-commerce operation has demonstrated its performance over time, growing revenue, profit, and return on invested capital. This diversification makes Amazon a great way to bet on AI while still offering a degree of safety.
