AWS Fails to Recover Data After Middle East Facility Strikes
Amazon Web Services (AWS) faced an unexpected challenge to its cloud infrastructure in the Middle East when strikes damaged facilities in Bahrain and the UAE six months ago. The damage exceeded what regional safeguards were designed to handle, leaving some customer data unrecoverable.
The affected customers had moved their workloads to other locations using backups where available. However, in one of the impacted UAE availability zones, AWS is still working to replace damaged infrastructure.
In Bahrain, the situation is more dire. Amazon has exhausted its options for recovering data that was not backed up elsewhere, indicating a permanent loss for some customers.
This incident raises questions about the reliability of cloud infrastructure and whether systems designed with redundancy can withstand physical damage. As AWS competes on reliability, companies increasingly depend on cloud infrastructure for critical operations.
