AWS has introduced Lambda Web Functions, a new way to run HTTP web applications on its serverless platform without rewriting existing code. This feature allows developers to deploy standard Node.js frameworks like Express, Hono, Fastify, or Next.js with a single command, while AWS handles scaling, multi-region distribution, and active CPU billing automatically.
Lambda Web Functions is the third form factor added to AWS Lambda, complementing Event Functions and MicroVMs. Event Functions follow the traditional event-driven model, ideal for backend processing. MicroVMs provide isolated environments for untrusted or user-generated code. The new Web Functions support concurrent HTTP request handling, making them perfect for web apps, API backends, and interactive workloads.
The feature simplifies global deployment by automatically setting up latency-based routing across regions. Developers can also control traffic distribution between code revisions, enabling canary deployments. AWS emphasizes cost efficiency for I/O-heavy workloads, as CPU billing is metered only during active processing.
Lambda Web Functions is now available in five regions, supporting Node.js 24 on Arm64 and VPC connectivity. The service integrates seamlessly with Amazon CloudFront, enhancing security through origin access control for private origins. Developers can start deploying Web Functions immediately using the AWS CLI.
