AWS Must Embrace Its Place as the Home Depot of AI Infrastructure
AWS has dominated the cloud infrastructure market by offering a vast catalog of services to developers. However, as adoption shifts towards platforms that provide better defaults and faster workflows, AWS needs to adapt its approach.
The company built its empire on giving developers a 'warehouse' of computing, storage, networking, and database parts. This model worked well for large companies with teams that could assemble and operate complex systems. However, smaller teams now prefer providers that handle more of the assembly for them.
Vercel is an example of a platform that runs on top of cloud infrastructure, including AWS services, while selling developers a smoother path from source code to a live application. This arrangement makes AWS a wholesaler, earning large returns but rarely controlling the customer relationship.
AWS can improve its position by serving platforms like Vercel as customers, partners, and distribution channels. The company needs stable APIs, clear service limits, predictable billing, fast account provisioning, and support that small companies can reach before problems threaten their business.
