AWS Pledges $1 Billion for Data Center Communities Amid Growing Backlash
Amazon Web Services (AWS) CEO Matt Garman has announced that the company will invest over $1 billion in communities where it operates data centers over the next five years. This move is seen as a response to growing backlash from politicians and consumers, with over 100 data center moratoriums being considered across the country.
The 'Data Center Commitment' aims to support education, job training, energy affordability, water and energy preservation, and other local priorities in these communities. AWS will also publish annual figures on its energy and water consumption, promising that its facilities will not raise local electricity bills or wipe out local water supplies.
Garman warned against the spread of what he believes is misinformation about data centers' impact on the environment and energy rates, tying the stakes to the AI race. He stated that if these measures are enacted, 'the U.S. could be writing its own losing ticket to this race, and the consequences would last generations.'
