AWS Pledges Billions for Data Center Communities Amid Criticism
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced plans to invest over $1 billion in US communities where it has data centers over the next five years. This investment is part of AWS's efforts to mitigate the environmental and economic impacts associated with its operations. The company claims that there is 'urgency' to build out its data center infrastructure, as other countries are also investing heavily in artificial intelligence (AI) for economic and national security benefits.
AWS has faced criticism from local communities over concerns about electricity demand, utility costs, and other impacts related to its data centers. In response, the company is committing to being 'water positive' across its data centers by 2030, meaning it will return more water to communities than it uses. AWS is already 75% of the way towards this goal.
The investment plans include spending on education, job training, energy affordability, and other local priorities. This move comes as over 100 data center moratoriums are being considered across the country, posing a political challenge for Republicans ahead of the US midterm elections in November.
