Azure Surges on Agentic AI Adoption, Outpaces Data Center Capacity
Microsoft's Azure growth is accelerating in 2026, driven by the increasing use of agentic AI. This technology allows agents to write code and handle tasks continuously across a user's files and network.
The rise of agentic AI has been dubbed 'a new paradigm' by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. Unlike chat interactions, these agents can run persistently, relying on Azure as the cloud layer that powers them. As a result, higher agent usage directly translates to more revenue for Azure.
On its Q4 earnings call in July, management reported customers are rapidly adopting Microsoft's database and analytics services to support AI agents. The number of customers using both Microsoft Fabric and Foundry grew 60% year over year last quarter. Foundry-built agents run on Azure, creating a tailwind for cloud growth.
The surge in demand is outpacing the pace at which new data center capacity can be brought online. CFO Amy Hood said additional Azure compute capacity was 'quickly monetized' during Q4, yet the platform remains supply-constrained. Microsoft expects Azure revenue to accelerate again to about 45% year over year on a constant-currency basis in fiscal Q1 2027.
