B-47 Stratojet: The Unsung Hero of Aviation Innovation

The Boeing B-47 Stratojet was a game-changer in aviation history. First flying on December 17, 1947, it was an instant radical departure from other aircraft of its time.

Its swept wing and six podded jet engines gave it the speed and range that no other plane could match. The B-47's design was influenced by German research captured after World War II, and its aerodynamicist George Schairer applied this knowledge to create a truly revolutionary aircraft.

The Stratojet had its quirks, however. Its thin wing made it difficult to hold fuel or landing gear, so Boeing used a 'bicycle' undercarriage with two main wheels in tandem under the fuselage and outrigger wheels in the engine pods. This meant that the plane couldn't rotate for takeoff or flare for landing.

Despite these challenges, the B-47 proved to be an incredibly influential design. Its shape influenced nearly every commercial jet airliner since, including the KC-135 tanker, the 707, and even Boeing's more recent models like the 777.

The aircraft was also used as a key part of Strategic Air Command's nuclear deterrent during the Cold War, with over 1,300 B-47 bombers in service at its peak. Its takeoff roll was an awe-inspiring sight to behold, and one that would stay with any who witnessed it.
