Bangladesh Government Faces Demands for Transparency on $3.7 Billion Boeing Deal
A Supreme Court lawyer has served a notice on the government of Bangladesh demanding full disclosure of documents related to the country's reported deal to purchase 14 Boeing aircraft from the United States. The notice, sent by Barrister MMG Sarwar Payel, seeks disclosure of the deal's terms, price, and procurement process.
The total cost of the proposed purchase is estimated at around $3.7 billion, according to media reports cited in the notice. The lawyer has raised concerns over transparency, financial justification, and public interest implications of such a large expenditure amid foreign exchange shortages and inflation.
The notice also questions the decision in light of alternative proposals, including an offer from Airbus. The lawyer demands an independent feasibility and financial assessment before any new commitment, while urging compliance with the Public Procurement Act 2006.
