Bangladesh Signs $3.7 Billion Deal for Boeing Aircraft
The government of Bangladesh has finalized a deal to purchase 14 aircraft from Boeing for $3.7 billion, amid criticism and discussions over the procurement. The agreement was signed on April 30, with deliveries scheduled between 2031 and 2035.
Biman Bangladesh Airlines has been operating Boeing aircraft for a long time, which explains their preference for this brand, according to Prime Minister's Adviser Zahed Ur Rahman. He noted that the necessary manpower, technical expertise, and support infrastructure are already in place, making it easier for Biman to operate Boeing aircraft.
The deal includes eight Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners, two 787-9 Dreamliners, and four 737-8 MAX jets. The purchase has been described as the largest ever made by Bangladesh's aviation sector. When questioned about the potential economic pressure on the country, Zahed Ur Rahman assured that the payment does not have to be made immediately or within a short time.
Regarding Airbus, the adviser stated that Bangladesh would also procure aircraft from this manufacturer as needed and that choosing Boeing does not mean Airbus is being excluded. He mentioned that discussions with the European Union, which manufactures Airbus aircraft, are ongoing, and there is no intention to leave one brand out in favor of the other.
