Banks Battle for Digital Settlement Supremacy with Stablecoins

Banks and payment companies are accelerating their push into stablecoins as they compete for control of digital settlement rails. Revolut has already launched EURR, a stablecoin pegged to the euro, while Visa is testing a seven-day stablecoin settlement system. JPMorgan, however, has taken a more cautious approach, saying it has no active stablecoin launch and keeping its JPM Coin as a tokenized deposit for institutional clients.

The growing interest in stablecoins among banks and payment networks marks a significant development in the crypto space, with implications for decentralized finance (DeFi), DEX/CEX flows, and payment infrastructure. The push towards on-chain settlement could also accelerate crypto adoption by making it easier for users to settle transactions using digital assets.

Visa's seven-day stablecoin settlement system is seen as a key development in the industry, allowing businesses to settle transactions more efficiently and reducing the need for traditional banking systems. Meanwhile, Revolut's EURR stablecoin offers an alternative to existing fiat currencies, providing users with greater flexibility in their financial transactions.
