Banks Team Up on Stablecoin Push

Wall Street is shifting its focus to stablecoins as major banks including Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS, Financials), Bank of America, and Citigroup join forces on a new project.

The consortium of 21 financial institutions aims to launch a U.S. dollar-pegged stablecoin in the first half of 2027, with the goal of expanding to other G7 currencies like the euro in the future.

This move marks a significant shift for traditional finance as banks now seek to compete with crypto natives like Tether and Circle.

The reserve backing the planned token will be one-to-one, running on public blockchains, making it potentially useful for institutional transactions and cross-border payments.
