Barclays Keeps JPMorgan Chase Rating Overweight After Strong Q2 2026 Results
Barclays Capital has reaffirmed its Overweight rating for JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM) following the bank's second-quarter 2026 earnings release. The report highlighted net income of US$21.2 billion and earnings per share (EPS) of US$7.70. Excluding significant items, adjusted net income was US$16.9 billion with EPS of US$6.14. The bank's capital strength was underscored by a standardized CET1 capital ratio of 14.1% and a tangible book value per share of US$113.35.
Barclays emphasized the importance of distinguishing between reported and adjusted earnings to assess sustainable profitability. The firm also noted that capital strength must be considered alongside future credit losses and regulatory requirements. Valuation should be evaluated through normalized earnings, price-to-tangible-book value, and return on tangible equity.
The bank's outlook includes three scenarios: a constructive scenario with stable deposits and disciplined lending, a base scenario assuming normalized net interest income, and a downside scenario with rising loan losses or weaker investment-banking activity. Barclays’ reiteration supports a positive stance, focusing on recurring profitability, deposit pricing, capital deployment, and fee income sustainability.
Investors are advised to evaluate the business over a full credit cycle rather than relying on a single strong quarter. While higher earnings and capital distributions can support shares, deterioration in credit quality may reduce valuation.
