Barrie's Fire Prevention Week Emphasizes Safe Charging Habits
The city of Barrie is observing Fire Prevention Week from October 4 to 10, with a focus on safe charging habits. The theme for this year's event is 'Charge Into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,' which highlights the risks associated with lithium-ion battery fires.
Lithium-ion batteries are used in many everyday electronics, such as smartphones and laptops, and require proper care to avoid overheating or catching fire. Barrie Fire & Emergency Service (BFES) is visiting schools throughout the week to share practical tips on safe charging practices.
The BFES will also be hosting several free community events, including a pop-up at Georgian College on October 6, an Ask Barrie Fire session at RONA+ on October 7, and the Barrie Fire Takeover and Kids Workshop at Home Depot on October 10. The event aims to educate residents on how to charge safely, recognize warning signs, and reduce the risk of fires.
Fire Chief Kevin White emphasizes that technology continues to evolve, bringing new fire safety risks into homes. By sharing practical tips and best practices, BFES hopes to empower residents to take control of their own fire safety.
