Bay Area Tech Giants Amazon and Synopsys Announce Hundreds of Layoffs
Amazon has disclosed plans to cut nearly 150 jobs at offices in San Francisco and Silicon Valley, adding to its global layoffs this year. The cuts are expected to take effect beginning October 20.
The e-commerce giant will eliminate 148 positions - 78 in San Francisco and 70 in Sunnyvale - according to notices filed with California employment regulators. At Amazon's downtown San Francisco office at 350 Bush St., most of the affected employees are listed as members of technical staff, including software development engineers and managers.
Separately, Synopsys, a Sunnyvale-based maker of software used to design and test computer chips, plans to permanently eliminate 128 jobs from its Sunnyvale campus on December 16. The cuts span dozens of job classifications, with a heavy concentration in engineering and research and development.
