A 17-year-old Durango teen narrowly escaped serious injury after a black bear broke into her bedroom through an open window.

The attack occurred around 2 am on Sunday at a condo on Escalante Drive, near Home Depot. The teen reportedly hid under her blankets as the bear sniffed her head before swiping at her stomach when she made a noise.

Fortunately for the teen, she was able to sit up and scream loudly, prompting the bear to leave the room. However, she did suffer three scratch marks and a bruise from the encounter.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials have set up a trap to catch the aggressive bear, which has already entered another nearby home. They warn residents to secure their trash, lock doors and windows, and avoid feeding or attracting bears.
