Beaver County Residents Get Answers on Chemical Smell Near Sherwin-Williams Plant
Residents in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, who complained about a chemical smell near the Sherwin-Williams manufacturing plant have finally received answers. New air testing found several compounds, including methyl methacrylate, a hazardous air pollutant, that were not present in other samples collected around the county.
Kristina Warnick, a resident who installed multiple air monitors inside and outside her home with help from the Beaver County Marcellus Awareness Community, said she was concerned about the repeated spikes in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) detected by the monitoring system.
The Breathe Project collected four air samples in Rochester and 26 samples throughout Beaver County, finding several compounds only present in Rochester. Methyl methacrylate was one of the most concerning compounds found in all four samples from Rochester but not in any other samples.
