Belavia, the national airline of Belarus, has received clearance from the U.S. government to resume purchasing spare parts and software directly from Boeing. The approval came from the U.S. Commerce Department, allowing Boeing to work with the carrier. According to Belarus’ representative at the United Nations, the decision was finalized at the end of October, as reported by BeIta newswire on October 31.

The airline also mentioned that the U.S. Treasury had previously issued a similar permission. These approvals open the door for Belavia to purchase new aircraft from Boeing. The U.S. government initially imposed sanctions on Belavia in 2022 but began easing restrictions in September 2025. The Bureau of Industry and Security removed the airline’s six Boeing 737-800s, one 737-300, and one 737-8 from the sanctions list, permitting operations, maintenance, and spare parts procurement for these jets.

The sanctions relief is part of a broader effort by Washington to improve relations with Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko. Meanwhile, Belavia has been expanding its fleet through unconventional means, including registering aircraft via Gambia. In 2025-26, the airline added three Airbus A330-200s, its first widebody aircraft, and three more 737-800s in June 2026.

Belavia has been banned from European airspace since 2021 after the Belarusian government intercepted a Ryanair flight to arrest an opposition activist. The carrier currently flies to destinations in Russia, the Middle East, and Asia.
