Berkshire Hathaway Abandons Amazon Stake Amid Surging Cloud Business
Berkshire Hathaway's new CEO Greg Abel made headlines when he sold off the company's entire 2.3 million-share stake in Amazon stock in the first quarter of 2026.
The move came as a surprise to many, especially given the impressive performance of Amazon's cloud business, Amazon Web Services (AWS), which reported a 37% sales increase in the second quarter of 2026.
Under CEO Andy Jassy, who previously led AWS, the company has been driving growth through its AI development platforms and tools, with a $169 billion run rate that would make it the 24th-largest business by sales in the U.S. if it were a standalone entity.
Jassy's vision for AWS is ambitious, predicting it will eventually become a $1 trillion business with significant free cash flow and return on invested capital.
