Berkshire Hathaway Doubles Down on Alphabet Investment
Berkshire Hathaway, under CEO Greg Abel's leadership, has significantly increased its stake in Alphabet, Google's parent company. The conglomerate purchased an additional $10 billion worth of shares directly from Alphabet through a private placement, increasing its position by $17 billion to around $36.6 billion during the second quarter.
This makes Berkshire Hathaway's investment in Alphabet its third-largest holding. While some investors may draw parallels between this move and Berkshire's successful investment in Apple, there are key differences. Unlike with Apple, Berkshire made a direct equity investment in Alphabet through the private placement.
Greg Abel's decisions to buy more of the stock appear to have been driven by his understanding of how AI is impacting Berkshire's operating businesses. He has stated that he sees AI as a significant growth area and believes Alphabet's investments in this space will pay off.
