Berkshire Hathaway's Secret Stake in DaVita Surpasses Apple Proportions
Berkshire Hathaway's portfolio is known for its massive stakes in well-known companies like Apple and American Express. However, one of its largest holdings proportionally is in a lesser-known healthcare business called DaVita (DVA -0.48%).
The company owns approximately 28.7 million shares of DaVita, giving it a significant stake of almost 45% in the equity. Berkshire's investment in DaVita was first made in 2011 by Ted Weschler, and Warren Buffett has remained tight-lipped about his reasoning for the investment.
Despite this, Berkshire has continued to hold onto its stake, even reducing it slightly over the past year through a series of small sell-offs. This could be seen as an act of profit-taking, given DaVita's impressive stock performance this year, with gains exceeding 56% year-to-date.
