Bessent's Husband Held Up to $250K in JPMorgan Stock Misreported as Cash
Scott Bessent's husband, John Freeman, was found to have held up to $250,000 in JPMorgan stock that was misreported as cash on a nomination disclosure. The error was discovered by officials in July 2025, and after learning of it, Freeman sold the shares for between $100,001 and $250,000.
According to ethics documents obtained by Politico, the Office of Inspector General reviewed the situation and determined that there was no 'knowing violation' of the Ethics in Government Act or federal conflict-of-interest law. The Office of Government Ethics certified Bessent's annual disclosure on September 22.
This incident follows a broader divestiture process after Bessent entered government, where he pledged to sell holdings and leave positions that could create actual or apparent conflicts. His nominee disclosure showed assets worth at least $521 million, including a Bitcoin ETF stake and large equity and currency positions.
