Bethesda Employees Stage Global Protests Against Microsoft Layoffs
Protests against Microsoft's layoffs at Bethesda have spread to nine cities across the US and Canada, with employees demanding better treatment from the company. The Save Our Devs events were organized by the One Bethesda Game Studio (OneBGS) union, which has been critical of Microsoft's handling of the layoffs.
The union claims that Microsoft ignored their proposal for staff reductions in February, only to implement mass layoffs four months later without consulting with the union. According to technical producer Nathan Han, employees directly involved in game development and ensuring their releases were disproportionately affected by the layoffs.
While morale among remaining Bethesda employees is at an all-time low, the mood within the union movement has improved. The Communication Workers of America (CWA) and its Canadian counterpart, CWA Canada, have filed complaints against Microsoft with the US National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), alleging improper conduct and coercion.
The layoffs have sparked concerns about the quality of future Bethesda games, with some employees suggesting that without experienced staff, the studio's releases may suffer as a result. The situation has raised questions about the impact of corporate restructuring on employee morale and game development.
