Bethesda's layoffs have been a source of controversy since Xbox announced plans to cut around 1,600 employees, with another 1,600 on the chopping block for the rest of the fiscal year. In an interview, lead character artist Alex Nguyen revealed that layoffs at Bethesda were relatively rare before its acquisition by Microsoft.

'One of the benefits' of working at Bethesda was indeed the rarity of layoffs, allowing employees to build long tenures and even plan their retirements there,' said Nguyen. This changed under Microsoft's ownership, with yearly layoffs now a harsh reality.

Technical producer Nathan Hahn echoed Nguyen's concerns, emphasizing that every employee contributes to the success of the company. 'Without us, Bethesda games aren't Bethesda games,' he warned. Nguyen also disputed Microsoft's claim that layoffs mainly affected management layers, pointing out that it was 'people on the ground making sure that this game works and putting it in the hands of players' who were let go.

The controversy surrounding the layoffs has been highlighted by protests from employees and the Communications Workers of America union. A large inflatable rat named 'Scabby' was brought to display outside Bethesda's Maryland office, while 800 red flags represented the workers affected by the layoffs.
