Bezos' Billion-Dollar Bet on Cloud Computing Pays Off Big Time
Jeff Bezos took a massive risk when he launched Amazon Web Services (AWS) in 2006, an initiative that critics at the time called his 'biggest bet' since starting Amazon.
The concept of cloud computing was largely unproven back then, and AWS required significant investments in data centers, networking infrastructure, and engineering talent years before generating meaningful profits.
Critics questioned why an online retailer like Amazon was pouring so much money into a business that seemed far removed from selling books and consumer goods. However, within a few years, AWS became the industry leader in cloud computing, with revenue exceeding $62 billion last year.
Bezos' gamble paid off, making AWS one of Amazon's most profitable businesses, estimated to be worth between $1 trillion and $2.6 trillion if it were a standalone company.
