Bezos Set to Sell $4 Billion in Amazon Shares Amid Record-Breaking Market Cap
Amazon's market capitalization has surpassed $3 trillion for the first time, but its stock price dropped by over 1% in after-hours trading. This dip followed a regulatory filing revealing that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos plans to sell nearly $4.1 billion worth of shares.
The sale is part of a pre-arranged plan, known as a 10b5-1 trading plan, which allows insiders to set aside shares for future sale without raising suspicions of insider trading. Bezos' holdings will decrease from around 884 million shares to approximately 869 million after the sale, representing about 8.1% of Amazon's outstanding shares.
This is not Bezos' first significant share sale; since 2002, he has cumulatively sold off approximately $50 billion worth of Amazon stock. Historically, he has used these proceeds to fund other ventures under his umbrella, particularly the space company Blue Origin, which is reportedly seeking to raise $10 billion at a $130 billion valuation.
