Generative AI Drives Customer Service Job Cuts Across Major Industries
Microsoft, Uber, and Commonwealth Bank of Australia have cut thousands of customer service jobs as they adopt generative AI systems to handle routine requests.
The companies confirm that workforce reductions are linked to AI in their support operations. Tier-one support roles, which address simple tasks like balance checks and flight changes, are being phased out rapidly.
Generative AI systems can now manage nuanced conversations and escalate only complex issues to human agents, a capability earlier chatbots lacked.
Microsoft has reduced its support workforce from approximately 50,000 to 40,000 in recent years. Judson Althoff said AI is saving the company about $750 million a year in customer service costs. Complex problems still require a human agent.
