Big Tech Bond Yields Soar Amidst Debt Spree
Big tech companies are facing higher borrowing costs as bond investors demand higher yields from Alphabet, Meta, and Nvidia. The move reflects a shift in credit market sentiment towards viewing these issuers' debt as less 'risk-free.'
Nicholas Mugalli, a financial analyst, noted that bond markets have officially penalized scale, with larger corporate offerings commanding wider yields and credit spreads.
Alphabet saw its credit spreads widen by 15 basis points, moving from 56 to 71 basis points as issuance sizes expanded from $1.25 billion to $3.50 billion. Meta and Nvidia exhibited similar pricing trends, where $4 billion bond offerings pushed spreads out by 15 to 19 basis points.
Mugalli stated that credit markets no longer treat big tech debt as 'risk-free paper.' He added that institutional investors demand concessions to absorb the 'supply deluge,' creating an 'explicit funding tax' on scale.
