Big Tech's AI spending habits are becoming increasingly evident as the five hyperscalers - Microsoft, Alphabet (Google), Amazon, Meta Platforms, and Oracle - reveal their strategies for funding massive investments in artificial intelligence.

Microsoft stands out as an outlier, paying cash for its AI buildout with a whopping $19.6 billion left over from operating cash flow last quarter, which covered net capital expenses of $35.8 billion. The company's total debt sits near $40.3 billion and cash equivalents and short-term investments add up to $76.8 billion.

Alphabet, on the other hand, is currently operating in red-ink mode with a negative free cash flow of $5.9 billion in Q2 2026 despite generating $39.1 billion of operating cash flow. However, it has ample cash reserves available and held $126.8 billion of liquid reserves at the end of Q1.

Amazon is the straightforward borrower, carrying total debt near $133 billion and paying no dividend or share buybacks. Meta Platforms leans into debt with borrowings of $83.7 billion and splits the AI check with a partner by bringing in financial giant BlackRock for a data center project. Oracle gets customers to pay first by signing multiyear AI computing deals with prepayments, creating a different capital structure.

Each hyperscaler has massive AI investment plans, but their strategies for funding these investments reveal very different approaches to managing cash flow and debt.
