Biman Bangladesh Airlines Set to Order Airbus Jets Amid Boeing Dominance
Biman Bangladesh Airlines is reportedly finalizing an order for ten Airbus aircraft, marking a significant shift in its fleet strategy. The order includes four widebody A350-900s and six narrowbody A321neos, with deliveries expected to begin in 2033 and continue until 2036 or 2037. This move is notable given the airline's historic preference for Boeing aircraft, which currently dominate its fleet. The A350 order was initially discussed during French President Emmanuel Macron's state visit in 2023, and Bangladeshi Minister of Civil Aviation and Tourism, M Rashiduzzaman Millat, recently confirmed the agreement would be signed in October 2026.
The order is set to be announced on October 7, 2026. The A350-900s will support long-haul expansion, while the A321neos will enhance short to medium-haul operations. This marks a departure from Biman Bangladesh's fleet, which currently consists of 14 Boeing aircraft, including 737-800s, 777-300ERs, and 787 Dreamliners. The airline has also recently placed a substantial order with Boeing, acquiring 25 aircraft this year alone.
Despite the upcoming Airbus order, Biman Bangladesh has historically flown very few Airbus jets. The airline operated six Airbus A310-300s from 1996 to 2016 and briefly leased two Airbus A330-200s from Wamos Air in 2017-2018. The new Airbus order signifies a strategic effort to diversify its fleet and balance its reliance on Boeing aircraft.
