Blackstart Digital Acquires Former IBM Campus for Data Center Development
A data center development and investment firm called Blackstart Digital has acquired the former IBM Almaden Research Center in South San Jose, California. The campus spans seven buildings with over 500,000 square feet within a 35-acre industrial park.
The acquisition is expected to be finalized by the end of the year, according to land use consultant Erik Schoennauer. Blackstart Digital aims to put the campus back to work in a way that honors its legacy as a hub for research and development.
Residents and environmental advocates had expressed concern about attracting more data centers to the region before uniform standards are established. The San Jose City Council rezoned the property in August, prompting worry from groups such as the Sierra Club, California Native Plant Society, and Mothers Out Front.
