BNP Paribas Keeps Sensitive Data Off Public Cloud Despite Google Deal
BNP Paribas has announced that it will continue to use on-premise infrastructure for sensitive customer data, despite signing a five-year partnership with Google. The deal gives BNP access to Google's public-cloud infrastructure and Gemini models, which the bank plans to use for AI development in areas such as corporate credit memos, sales, trading, research, and structuring.
The French bank will retain ownership of its data, which will not be used by Google to train or refine its models. BNP Group Chief Information Officer Marc Camus stated that the agreement does not mark a wholesale move away from on-premise infrastructure, citing medical information held by its insurance operations as an example of highly confidential data.
BNP plans to continue using open-source models and maintaining its partnership with French AI company Mistral. The bank sees scope to use Google technology for less sensitive work such as invoice processing and data management.
