BNP Paribas Partners with Google Cloud for Agentic AI Expansion

BNP Paribas, Europe's largest bank by assets, has signed a five-year partnership with Google Cloud to expand its access to AI-optimized infrastructure and Gemini models. The deal gives BNP Paribas wider access to Google Cloud's Gemini Enterprise platform for building and deploying enterprise AI agents.

The agreement is focused on agentic AI specifically, which involves creating narrow, task-specific agents tailored to specific business needs rather than general-purpose assistants. BNP Paribas will use this technology across five functions: corporate credit memos, sales, trading, research, and structuring.

Notably, the bank has explicitly kept sensitive customer data, medical records tied to its insurance arm, and critical operations on its own on-premises infrastructure rather than migrating them to Google's servers. This decision reflects a segmentation strategy where agentic AI and general infrastructure workloads go to Google Cloud while high-sensitivity data stays under BNP Paribas's direct physical control.

Google addressed the issue of data ownership directly, stating that BNP Paribas will retain ownership of its data and it will not be used to train, tune, or refine Google's models. This commitment is becoming standard in enterprise AI deals due to regulatory scrutiny around bank-cloud partnerships.
