Bodycam footage released in United Healthcare CEO murder case
Police bodycam footage released on Friday provides a detailed look at the arrest of Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the shooting death of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The videos, recorded during Mangione’s December 9, 2024, arrest in Altoona, Pennsylvania, show officers locating him at a McDonald’s and confirming his identity after he initially provided a fake name. The footage captures officers finding a gun cartridge in his belongings, which later proved to be linked to the murder weapon.
Mangione, an Ivy League-educated man from a wealthy Maryland family, was arrested five days after Thompson’s killing in Manhattan. The videos reveal Mangione’s nervous demeanor as officers question him about his recent activities and the false identification he presented. Prosecutors later used a journal recovered from Mangione’s backpack to establish his intent to target a health insurance executive.
Mangione pleaded guilty in August to federal stalking charges and faces life imprisonment when sentenced in December. He also faces murder charges in New York state court, though those proceedings have been postponed as his legal team seeks to dismiss the case. The bodycam footage was unsealed after a Manhattan judge granted a request from CNN, providing a rare glimpse into the investigation that led to Mangione’s arrest.
