Boeing 737 Dominance Continues Despite Troubled History

The Boeing 737 has had its fair share of troubles, from crashes to scandals, but it still remains one of the most popular commercial aircraft in the world. Despite the MAX's troubled history, airlines continue to order the 737 in large quantities, with a backlog of over 4,000 aircraft as of early 2026.

The single-aisle market is a duopoly, with Boeing and Airbus being the only two viable options for airlines. This means that any airline that walks away from the 737 has exactly one alternative - the A320neo family, which also has a significant backlog and will not be available in large numbers until the early 2030s.

Airlines are locked into using the 737 due to the high costs of switching to a different aircraft type. This 'infrastructure lock-in' means that airlines have invested heavily in training pilots, maintenance crews, and spare parts inventory for the 737, making it prohibitively expensive to switch to Airbus.

The 737 MAX also offers significant fuel efficiency improvements over its predecessor, with CFM International LEAP-1B engines burning approximately 14-15 percent less fuel per seat. This is a critical factor in an era of volatile oil prices and growing environmental scrutiny.
