Boeing 737 Max Software Glitch Cleared, Path for Certification Opened
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has determined that a software glitch in some Boeing 737 Max flight computers poses no safety concern. This decision clears the way for approval of the largest variant of the 737 Max family, the Max 10. The Max 10 has been delayed for years due to various issues.
The FAA's determination was based on the fact that pilots retain full control of the aircraft and the indications to the flight crew are clear and unambiguous. This means that even in an unusual landing scenario, pilots can still access automated flight guidance.
Boeing is working directly with airlines to formalize a procedure that will allow pilots to re-enable automated vertical navigation should this situation occur. The FAA believes that the Max 10 could be certified as soon as later this month.
