Boeing 737 MAX Software Glitch Grounds Go-Around Maneuver
A software glitch in the Boeing 737 MAX flight management system has been reported to cause the vertical navigation function, VNAV, to disengage during a specific go-around scenario. The issue affects the 737 MAX 7 and 737 MAX 10 models, with versions 14 and 14.1 being affected.
The glitch occurs when a precision approach is flown on autopilot, followed by a go-around, and then the crew changes the pre-programmed flight path. In this scenario, VNAV can drop out, causing the autopilot to switch to a simpler pitch mode, which increases pilot workload at low altitude.
Boeing has confirmed the issue and stated that existing pilot procedures allow crews to manage the situation safely. However, the FAA is treating it seriously and convening a Corrective Action Review Board to decide whether it's a safety issue.
The software issue may delay the delivery of the 737 MAX 7 and 737 MAX 10 models, with Boeing originally planning to fix the issue in 2028. The company is now working to accelerate the fix, and a pilot bulletin will be prepared to inform crews about what to expect if VNAV drops out.
