Boeing 747 Freighters Replaced by More Efficient Models
The aging Boeing 747 freighter is set to be replaced by newer and more efficient models. The Boeing 777-8F and Airbus A350F will take over cargo routes, offering better fuel efficiency and lower emissions. The 747-8F, a specialized variant of the 747, will remain for nose-loading cargo operations.
The Boeing 777-8F has received over 80 firm orders from carriers like Cargolux and Qatar Airways Cargo. Its first delivery is targeted for 2028, after delays related to the 777X program. The aircraft retains the 777's systems but features efficient engines and redesigned wings.
The Airbus A350F has secured 107 firm orders from 14 carriers, including Atlas Air and Cathay Pacific. It can carry over 110 metric tons of cargo and fly up to 4,700 nautical miles. The aircraft's composite structure reduces weight, providing operators with maintenance commonality benefits.
