Boeing 747: How a Jumbo Gamble Transformed Air Travel
The Boeing 747 was born out of a conversation between Pan Am president Juan Trippe and Boeing president Bill Allen in 1965. Trippe asked Allen if Boeing could build an aircraft twice the size of anything currently flying, and despite the enormous challenge, they shook hands on a deal to build such a plane.
The result was the largest commercial airliner at the time, capable of carrying 400 passengers - more than double any other commercial airliner. Its introduction in 1970 revolutionized air travel by spreading fixed operating costs over hundreds of passengers and dramatically reducing the cost per seat.
This led to a significant increase in mass international tourism, with millions of people making their first intercontinental flight in a 747. Over 1,574 aircraft were built between 1968 and 2023, making it one of the most successful large commercial aircraft in history.
