Boeing 787-9 Cleared of Grounding Rumors After Maintenance Issues Resolved
The Boeing 787-9 has been cleared of rumors surrounding its grounding. A review of maintenance issues involving one United Airlines jet, N61101, earlier this year revealed that the aircraft is back in service after repairs. Records show that on February 26, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) registry issued a standard airworthiness certificate for N61101, a 2026 Boeing 787-9 owned by United.
However, the jet experienced disruptions from April to June due to an electrical odor and other issues. It was returned to service after repairs in July. By September, public flight history showed N61101 operating long-haul service again, including San Francisco-London and San Francisco-Singapore rotations.
The FAA registry warns that a registration record is not a standalone determination of airworthiness, but together with the valid certificate and active fleet status, it contradicts claims that this particular aircraft remains grounded. It also does not support conclusions about every 787-9 in service.
