Boeing, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, and the Japan Ministry of Defense celebrated four decades of collaboration on the CH-47 Chinook helicopter program with a joint ceremony at Boeing’s Philadelphia site. The partnership has been instrumental in maintaining Japan’s Chinook fleet, enhancing local manufacturing capabilities, and supporting critical missions.
Maj. Gen. Kawachi of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force highlighted the Chinook’s role as the backbone of strategic airlift capabilities for Japan’s military forces, emphasizing the contributions of thousands of individuals involved in the program over the years.
Masahiro Fujita, Director of Helicopter Business Management Group at Kawasaki Heavy Industries, expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from all stakeholders and reiterated the commitment to continued collaboration. Heather McBryan, Vice President and Program Manager of Boeing Cargo Programs, underscored the strength of the partnership, built on trust, transparency, and a focus on delivering reliable and safe aircraft.
The collaboration between Boeing and Kawasaki Heavy Industries began in the mid-1980s to meet Japan’s heavy-lift and transport needs. Together, they have co-produced over 100 CH-47J/JA aircraft, supporting missions ranging from national defense to humanitarian assistance, including disaster relief efforts in the Pacific region.
Japan is the largest operator of Chinook helicopters outside the U.S., utilizing the aircraft for heavy transport, resupply, and disaster recovery missions such as earthquake, typhoon, and tsunami response.
