Boeing Axes 747 Production Amid Rise of Twin-Engine Giants
Boeing has officially ceased production of its iconic 747 aircraft after decades of dominance in cargo transport. The final 747, a 747-8F freighter registered as N863GT, was delivered to Atlas Air in January 2023.
The decision to end production comes as airlines shift towards more fuel-efficient twin-engine jets like the 787, which offer lower operating costs and reduced environmental impact. In contrast, the four-engine design of the 747 has become increasingly uneconomical due to its higher fuel consumption and maintenance expenses.
Despite the end of new production, Atlas Air continues to operate older variants of the 747-200 across 170 countries. The company's fleet remains unmatched in terms of nose-loading capacity, essential for transporting oversized cargo.
