Boeing Engineers Threaten Strike Over 777X Certification
The Boeing 777X certification process may be put on hold due to a potential strike by 17,000 engineers and technical staff. The workers' contracts are set to expire on October 6, and despite a new offer from Boeing that includes a 10% wage increase, the union has yet to agree to a deal.
According to Boeing CEO Kelly Ortbeg, if the strike happens, 'essentially the 777 certification program shuts down until we get the engineers back.' This would impact not only the 777X but also production of the 737 MAX narrowbody twinjets.
The Boeing 777X has been plagued by delays and is currently expected to enter service in 2027. Despite this, airlines around the world have collectively placed over 560 firm orders for the aircraft, with Emirates being the largest customer.
