Boeing Expands Landing Gear Exchange Program to 737 MAX Platform
The Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) has expanded its Landing Gear Exchange Program to include the 737 MAX platform, marking a significant milestone for the company. This development solidifies Boeing's position as a long-term partner to airlines, taking on risks related to inventory obsolescence.
The first landing gear exchange with American Airlines demonstrates the program's quality benchmarks and validates the end-to-end process. By offering cost-effective alternatives, Boeing aims to strengthen its customer relationships and expand its aftermarket services opportunity beyond aircraft sales.
Boeing's diversified growth story gains momentum as it reports a robust demand backlog of $715 billion by the end of its second quarter, including commercial backlog of $597 billion. This consists of thousands of orders for 737 MAX, along with substantial backlog across other programs such as 767, 777X, and 787.
However, risks remain for Boeing's expanded program, including scaling exchange inventory capital investment, potential bottlenecks due to demand outpacing supply, and reliance on certified MRO partners introducing coordination and quality control challenges. Moreover, Boeing takes on greater financial exposure by assuming inventory and obsolescence risk from operators.
