A US trial has opened over the fatal Boeing 737 MAX crash that killed an Irish-born UN employee, Michael 'Mick' Ryan. Ryan, a 39-year-old engineer with the UN World Food Programme, died in the March 2019 crash on Ethiopian Airlines.

The trial is expected to take about 12 days and will hear claims from Ryan's survivors to determine damages. Ryan's family has rejected Boeing's voluntary payments, calling them 'blood money.'

Boeing has apologized for the crashes and acknowledged that anti-stall software was implicated in both accidents. The company has settled the vast majority of claims with agreements not made public.
