Boeing Fined $3.1 Million for Safety Violations Amid Pressure to Meet Delivery Schedules

A door plug blew out of an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-9 MAX on January 5, 2024, leaving a hole in the side of the aircraft at around 16,000 feet. Fortunately, no one was killed.

The incident led to a safety inspection and subsequent fine of $3.1 million proposed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) against Boeing. The agency found hundreds of quality system violations across Boeing's 737 factory in Renton, Washington, and Spirit AeroSystems' 737 factory in Wichita, Kansas.

The FAA also discovered that Boeing presented two unairworthy aircraft to the agency for airworthiness certificates and failed to follow its own quality system. Specifically, a non-Organization Designation Authorization (ODA) employee pressured an ODA unit member to sign off on a 737 MAX to meet a delivery schedule despite the aircraft not complying with applicable standards.

Boeing paid the fine in full in January 2026 but did not publicly announce it. The payment was only confirmed by the FAA in September 2026, after being questioned by Reuters. This lack of transparency is seen as awkward given Boeing's claims to have changed its culture around transparency.
